Back in Ukraine

On our last Saturday in Canada, Shannon was able to have a good visit with her sister, Ramona, who drove up to Lloydminster to spend time with us. It had been a while since they were last together. On that same day, Lindsay's church was having a special day to kick off Sunday School and welcome their neighbours to stop by. They was lots of hamburgers and hot dogs, munchies, cotton candy and watermelon. They also had different games the kids could be a part of as well as horse rides, which Spencer and Sydney wanted to take part in.

Shannon loves working with puzzles and our suitcases fit the bill. I usually stay out of her way and help out if needed, otherwise she has a knack of fitting it all together. Amazing lady!

Packed and ready to go!

We were so blessed to have Mark, from Lashburn, take us to a hotel near the Edmonton Airport. Our daughter had started a new job and wasn't able to take us back and Mark replied to our email saying that he was going that way and could give us a ride. It was a great ride as Mark shared the amazing things that God had been doing in his life since coming to faith in Christ. We were blessed! THANK YOU Mark!!

We left Edmonton on Monday at 1:10 pm and arrived back in Ukraine on Tuesday, September 10. We arrived in Dnipro at 8:30 pm and Victor picked us up and took us to our home in the village. We made sure to stay up as late as we could unpacking so as to get a good night's sleep and it worked well. We slept for 10 hours straight. WOW! It has been a long time since Scott has ever slept for 10 hours straight! We find that when we travel and cross major time differences, the key for us is to sleep as little as possible on the plane and in airports. We do drift off a bit on the plane at times, but our adjustment both in Canada and now back in Ukraine has been amazing. We are not needing naps during the day, although Shannon did sleep going into and out of Dnipro the other day when we got groceries. But we seemed to have switched seamlessly back into the Ukraine time zone with the 9 hour difference. We are thankful!

All of our suitcases came through without any problems. We brought back some things that we cannot get here like brown sugar, Hawkins Cheezies, Kraft peanut butter, baking powder, cereal and some spices. Ulzana was very happy at our Russian class yesterday as we had some Cheezies for her. She had tried them before and then wanted them imported into Ukraine. Ulzana was pretty excited to take some home with her.

When we went to Canada, we went home with 3 suitcases and returned with 4. Actually one was stuffed inside one going home as we knew we wanted to bring some supplies back with us.

We are still unpacking a bit and getting the yard caught up again with cutting the grass (more weeds than grass). Scott hopes to finish the grass on Monday as the mower quit working shortly after he started it on Saturday. We bought a new spark plug at Nova Lenya and hope that makes the difference.

We have also been working on our Russian a bit and had a lesson on Saturday with Ulzana. We were hoping to do more studying while in Canada, but we seldom had time to just be alone and it was easier to leave it alone than try to press through. Now we are back at it and we are hoping to make more strides towards understanding Russian over the next number of months.

The day after we got home, we found a couple of nice surprises. Our chickens have started to lay some eggs. We are averaging about 1-2 per day, so that is a start. One of these days we need to thin out our roosters, although they are not real heavy. They look bigger than what they are. We picked one up today and he is probably hoping he is too light, but the thin-down needs to begin soon.

We are thankful to Kolya who looked after our chickens while we were away. We also brought back a new galvanized chicken waterer. We could only find plastic ones here and some of them were too easily broken, so this one will be a huge blessing. It also holds more water, so we have a little more time if we don't get at it every day.

As we were walking around out yard, we found that we still have a few grapes that we can eat. They are near the end of their time, but the green grapes are incredibly sweet. We knew that we had a plum tree, but they were very small when we left for Canada. Now they are probably about one-half the size we normally buy in Canada, but were they ever tasty. They would not want to be left on the tree much longer as they were getting soft, but Shannon picked them and made 12 pints of fruit. Something to look forward to.
