Russian lessons, gardening and burning brush piles

Over the past few days, we continue to work on our Russian as Ulzana always gives us homework and our lessons are every Tuesday and Saturday. We are so blessed with Ulzana as our teacher. She is always so well prepared and in her lessons she is always moving us forward. Today, was one of those moments where it was a good day. There is still so much we don't understand, but Ulzana is very good at teaching us the ins and outs of why things work as they do.

This past week we have been to the dentist to get our teeth cleaned and for Scott to get an estimate on repairing his back left molar. The cleaning cost us $45 each which is amazing to the last cost we had in Canada. The dentist told Scott that she recommended rebuilding the molar as the tooth looks overall good and healthy. The rebuild will cost around $75, whereas to do a root canal and crown would cost about $200. That is quite a bit different than dental costs in Canada.

We also had the car back in the garage the same day to get some repairs done. They had ordered a few items that would hopefully fix a metal-on-metal sound whenever we turned hard to the left or right. When we got the car back, the problem was solved!

Another problem we had with the car was with the lights on dim. The distance was not good at all on dim whereas the bright lights were amazing. With Max's help, we found out that the bulb was shot. We got a new one on our way to our small group in Zaporosia, but when we changed it, we had no lights, dim or bright, on the left side. We found out the next morning that a fuse had blown. That was  an easy fix. We look forward to seeing what our low beams are like next time we drive in the dark.

On Friday, we brought in a couple of beds as we have a work team coming from Salmon Arm, BC. We will keep two of the guys at our place while Garry and Teresa keep the other two. We are looking forward to the work ahead of us as we totally renovate Yana's home. Yana had NO running water and NO inside bathroom (think outhouse) and sometimes we complain in Canada because we don't have some perk that someone else's house has. It will be amazing to see the makeover to Yana' home.

The beds are cleaned and Shannon made some homemade buns and Scott rototilled the garden. Seems early to work in the garden, but we are enjoying it.

Rototilling in March

Saturday (today) was a busy day as we burned down a big pile of branches and grass, planted thirteen rows of garden (lots of onions, spinach, beets, garlic, peas, carrots, parsley and parsnips). The ground was very nice to work in and this evening we are getting a beautiful rain. The timing was great to plant a lot of the garden.

First thing this morning we lit the pile of brush in the yard next to us. It was amazing how hot it got and how quickly it burned. See the pictures below.

Came down fast
Not much left

Something Shannon did that was special for lunch today was to use the coals from the fire to cook our meal. She wrapped up potatoes, carrots and onions in one package of tinfoil and two pork chops in the other package. The meal was amazing! I am married to a GREAT cook!

A very tasty meal
At 4 pm, Ulzana arrived to put us through the paces in Russian. It was one of those days when it went well for a lot of it. Still lots to learn, but it is coming.

Take care until next time! Have a great weekend!
