Learning Russian, birthday cake and our village

It's been a quiet week for us here. On Tuesday morning, we took birthday cake to the classroom to share with all the students. They eagerly shared cake and had a short break from their lesson!

We keep our brains working by studying our lessons each day and then when we can take no more, we go for a walk, maybe 1.5 miles. Today we went a different direction and walked about 2.5 miles.

One encounters many unusual things along the way, as you can see. It really is a farm village. There are dogs and cats wandering everywhere, as well as chickens, ducks and geese. Today we even saw turkeys in one yard, but we didn't think to take any pictures.

 Garry stopped to chat when he drove past us and said that they were loading a truck with sunflower seeds around the corner. We walked over to observe for a few minutes, and again didn't think to take pictures. Oops.

Well, it's back to the books!

It is amazing how much stuff one acquires over the course of several decades! Helping Scott's parents with their garage sale helped us realize the importance of dealing with material possessions promptly rather than putting them away for another day, which doesn't arrive for many, many years, in some cases! Years worth of good deals Treasures waiting to be discovered The sale was a big success I think. Lots of people dropped by and went away with new treasures. The garage was full and the shop seemed to have an unending supply of items to be sold. However, by Saturday noon we had managed to clear out all the nooks and crannies and there was a feeling of excitement in the air as we saw just how much stuff had been sold. Some new experiences

  This past week we continued to do more work in the house and both closets are completed and in use! With our bedroom closet finished, we have now emptied all but one suitcase and the rest are under the bed. Yea! Now it looks like we are staying with the suitcases out of sight. From Saturday evening to later on Monday afternoon, our WiFi was down. I thought maybe my money had run out, so I went to the village store to put money on the account, but when I got home, we still didn't have any WiFi. Max stopped by shortly after to say that it was down throughout the village and now my account is good for 2-3 months. Nellie has been over a couple of times to help us with the Russian language. It is amazing how challenging it is. We came across a Russian speaker on the internet and he shares the alphabet very slowly and it helps to get the proper accent and sound of each letter. Almost ready to go!

We arrived back in the Cut Knife area on Friday and began to get ready for the final preparations before we leave from Edmonton Monday morning. We got the car washed up before we came out to the farm and then did some final cleaning once we got here. We hauled in our six 50 pound bags from the Seacan to do the final touches and to make sure we had what we really needed. The challenge is keeping each suitcase within the 50 pounds, but we did it.  Bags packed and ready to go! On Saturday, the car was ready to go (oil changed) in the Seacan and that gave us a few challenges. We went up metal ramps at first and then with snow on the tires, the car almost slipped off. We were able to back down and then we used some recycled rubber ramps and it still presented a few challenges with the snow, but it is in!
