The week before Christmas

I mentioned in our last blog that we had purchased a car. We knew that living in rural Ukraine that this would need to happen. We are so thankful for Max Rudei, who has been working with Garry and Teresa since they arrived in Ukraine. Max has been trying to find us a good solid car and at a reasonable price.

We ended up purchasing a 2015 Geely MK. It is a Chinese car that is fairly popular in Ukraine. They are a pretty plain car and that is okay with us. We had looked at other cars and they were older and more expensive. This one was about $2000 US less than older ones we had looked at. This one has just over 14,000 kms on it and looks to be in great shape. Thank you Max! We are waiting until we get some insurance on it before we take it on the road. We have attached some pictures.

Shannon continues to sew curtains for our home. The curtains in the bedroom are now done and we just need some screws to hold the rods in place. Shannon has two more curtains to make and with the leftovers she is making a table cloth. She is an amazing seamstress!

Today we were in Dnipro with Victor to get documents in place for a temporary resident visa. They have to be done yearly and ours is supposed to be ready by January 10.

We got home this afternoon and a group of 7 from Krivoy Rog (about 2.5 hours west of us) came to share a message and give gifts to the students (they each got some treats, socks and a blanket). The speaker shared a bit about Christmas and encouraged them not to focus on presents, but to keep Jesus at the center. They were also encouraged to know that even though they may lack a family, they are part of the family of God. After a while we had some snacks. Shannon made up a bunch of homemade biscuits with salami and slices of apple. There was nothing left to bring home!

Almost ready to go!

We arrived back in the Cut Knife area on Friday and began to get ready for the final preparations before we leave from Edmonton Monday morning. We got the car washed up before we came out to the farm and then did some final cleaning once we got here. We hauled in our six 50 pound bags from the Seacan to do the final touches and to make sure we had what we really needed. The challenge is keeping each suitcase within the 50 pounds, but we did it.  Bags packed and ready to go! On Saturday, the car was ready to go (oil changed) in the Seacan and that gave us a few challenges. We went up metal ramps at first and then with snow on the tires, the car almost slipped off. We were able to back down and then we used some recycled rubber ramps and it still presented a few challenges with the snow, but it is in! A busy week

We have now been in Ukraine for three weeks and this past week has been busy doing a number of different things, some of them rather messy (for Scott). On Monday, Scott spent 2 1/2 hours in the attic putting spray foam insulation in the peak to keep out the snow. He got the sticky stuff all over his gloves, on his clothes and in his hair!! I was able to get some of it out using olive oil, but most of it I had to cut out.  The beginning of the spray foam job Now the snow will not get in, at least not here!        We drove out to the barn to pick up some wood to begin our closet projects. The boards were way to long to go in the van, so Scott had to use a hand saw and cut them down. It was almost dark, so it was interesting! Our First Entry!

Last week we went to Langley, BC for our interviews with the International Mission Leadership Team (IMLT). The weather was delightfully warm compared to Saskatchewan! We saw daffodils and crocuses and green grass. Spring will come to Saskatchewan one of these.... weeks! On our walk home from supper one evening, we had our picture taken by a flowering shrub. The meetings went well. We met some new people, ate too much food, and learned a lot about EFCCM. After three days of meetings, we were invited to become apprentice missionaries to Ukraine!! It was a culmination of many months of work and prayer. But there is still much to do before we actually get to Ukraine. Scott's last Sunday as Pastor of Good Shepherd Community Church in Cut Knife, SK is April 1st.
