First full week in Ukraine

Well, it is one week ago that we landed in Kiev. We have had a busy week cleaning our new home. We are very thankful for the work Garry and Teresa and their work teams have done to give us such a wonderful home to live in. We are blessed!

Most of our time has been spent cleaning within our home. There is gyproc dust and construction dust pretty much everywhere and that is to be expected with all the construction that has taken place. Each day we accomplish a bit more and we are seeing a lot more change with each passing day.

We attended our first birthday party last Thursday for Sasha. We had a baked potato and a meat sandwich for supper and cake and ice cream later. When we get some ice cream, we will attach a photo one day as it is a unique container.

Shannon went with Garry and Teresa to Dnipro last Friday and did purchase a wardrobe, which is now put together and in use. That emptied four suitcases! The closet will be something we tackle next as they are empty rooms in need of selves and rods. The one closet out in the main area is something that we want to use as a closet/pantry. Our garden is ploughed for next Spring, so we will look forward to growing vegies and flowers here. This is one of our favorite things to do!

We will have a variety of fruit as we have pear trees, apple trees, plum trees, apricot trees and walnut trees in the yards here. There may be others also, so next Spring will be an adventure.

We went to church in Dnipro to Morningstar Church (an EFCC church) and met a lot of great people. Many people speak English there, but not during the service. Misha sat next to Scott and interpreted throughout the service. Shannon found it harder to hear, so we need someone between us or behind us. We really appreciated Misha helping us at church. We have learned how to PIN a location so that we can use our GPS to find it next time.

After church, we went to Pasata Hata, which has many original Ukrainian dishes. We didn't have a lot of time as Garry had to teach an English class for Lena at 2 pm. There were many people at the class and many ages. (See photo) Shannon met Lena when she came to Summer English Institute (SEI) in July 2017. Lena has a neat story as SEI was instrumental in her coming to faith in Christ. With Garry and Teresa home in Manitoba for Christmas, Lena asked Shannon and I to speak at the December class.

Garry is getting Scott used to driving as he drove to church on Sunday and then to Zaparosia on Monday night for a small group meeting where we met Steve and Jo and their boys (met them at Kiev and rode home together) and we also met Jessica, who is from New Hampshire and is in the process of getting an orphanage going. We pinned their location so that we can make it there and back on our own. We also pinned our home so that we have a place to return to! On our way home, Garry had to stop at a farm to AI a cow for a lady. He does AI for many people.

We have had a lot of rain these past two days (Monday/Tuesday) which is going to be great for the farmland next Spring. They plough the land each fall to allow the moisture to go deep, as rain isn't as plentiful during the growing season. The temperature today is about +4, but sounds like it will be into single digit freezing temperatures for the next few days. We haven't had any snow to speak of yet and yet Dnipro had snow and some of the back streets were quite icy as we went to church. The rain has probably cleared a lot of that up.

Today we have done some cleaning on the hide-a-bed and hide-a-chair. Garry said that all couches in Ukraine are a hide-a-bed of some kind. They are opened up drying from being cleaned.

Over the next week, we want to delve deeply into learning the Russian language. When you attend church and understand only a word or two, you definitely feel like a fish out of water.

Until next time, keep counting and sharing your blessings!
